Greetings from the Committee for a Future with Children – and our recently published analysis

It was a pleasure meeting with you during our visit to South Korea. Our discussions provided invaluable insights, and we remain deeply appreciative of the time and expertise you shared with us. We would also like to share with you our first publication, “The Silent Crisis: The Impact of Declining Birth Rates on Sweden’s Economy and Welfare”, which was released in December. The analysis highlights Sweden’s demographic trajectory toward an ageing and shrinking population, and the far‑reaching implications this may have if current trends persist.
Our projections indicate that, by the next turn of the century, Sweden’s GDP could fall to less than half of what would be expected under stable demographic conditions. This shift risks placing significant strain on public finances, reducing the effectiveness of monetary policy, and increasing the likelihood of long‑term economic stagnation.
While technological advancement and migration can mitigate some of these pressures, neither development alone can fully offset the decline in the labour force caused by falling fertility. The Committee concludes that Sweden must begin adapting now, and that more ambitious, long‑term reforms will be required to strengthen fertility, sustain economic growth, and secure the foundations of the welfare system.
Given the importance of these issues, we are particularly grateful for the opportunity we had to learn from your experience and policy approaches. We hope to continue the exchange between our institutions and would welcome any opportunity for future dialogue or collaboration.
